John Rhoden Sculpture Garden at Hammonds House Museum
The John Rhoden Sculpture Garden is an ongoing outdoor installation dedicated to the work and legacy of sculptor John Rhoden. The garden features ten bronze sculptures and one teak wood sculpture, creating a defining attraction for Hammonds House Museum and a destination for art lovers and cultural visitors.
Born in Birmingham, Alabama, Rhoden showed artistic promise early and later developed his practice through encounters with major figures including Hale Woodruff, Alain Locke, Augusta Savage and Jacob Lawrence.
The garden was created through a historic collaboration between the John Rhoden Collection at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and Hammonds House Museum. The partnership established a permanent cultural space designed to advance public engagement with Rhoden’s work and legacy.
The sculptures on view are gifts from the John Walter and Richanda Phillips Rhoden Collection at PAFA, bringing Rhoden’s work into a public setting that invites reflection, discovery and repeated visits.
